Step 1: Caramelize the Onions in the Slow Cooker
- Add the sliced onions, butter, olive oil, and sugar to the slow cooker.
- Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.
Step 2: Prepare the Broth
- Once the onions are caramelized, add the garlic, beef broth, white wine (if using), Worcestershire sauce, and thyme to the slow cooker.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hoursor high for 3-4 hours.
Step 3: Prepare the Bread Topping
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast for 5-7 minutes or until golden brown.
Step 4: Assemble the Soup
- Ladle the hot
- soup into oven-safe bowls or crocks.
- Place a slice of toasted baguette on top of each bowl and sprinkle generously with Gruyère cheese.
Step 5: Broil the Cheese
- Place the bowls under the oven’s broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Carefully remove and serve immediately.
