Patty Melt Recipe

Instructions

1. Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat.

  • Add 4 tablespoons of butter, then stir in the sliced onions.

  • Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper.

  • Turn heat to medium-low and cook 15–20 minutes, stirring until soft and caramelized.

  • Turn off heat and set aside.

2. Prepare the Burger Patties

  • In a bowl, mix together:

    • Ground beef

    • Worcestershire sauce

    • Garlic powder

    • Salt and pepper

  • Gently mix and divide into 6 equal portions.

  • Shape into very flat ovals slightly larger than your bread (they’ll shrink when cooked).

3. Prep the Bread

  • Lay out 12 slices of bread.

  • Spread yellow mustard on 6 of the slices.

4. Cook the Patties

  • Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium heat.

  • Cook patties for 3 minutes per side.

  • After flipping, top each with:

    • A portion of caramelized onions

    • 1 slice American cheese

    • 1 slice Swiss cheese

  • Cook until patties are done (about 6 minutes total).

5. Assemble the Patty Melts

  • Place each cheesy patty on a mustard-covered bread slice.

  • Clean the griddle with a paper towel (use a spatula for safety).

  • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter on the griddle.

6. Toast the Sandwiches

  • Place sandwiches on the griddle, then top with the remaining bread slices.

  • Toast for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crisp.

  • Add the final 2 tablespoons of butter before flipping.

7. Serve

  • Transfer to a cutting board.

  • Cut in half and serve immediately.
