Old-Fashioned War-Time Cake

Preparation

Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Simmer the Base
In a small saucepan, combine the water, brown sugar, raisins, and butter. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ground cloves.

Combine and Stir
Pour the cooled raisin mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined—don’t overmix.

Bake the Cake
Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve
Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing. Optional: Serve as-is or dust with powdered sugar for a classic touch.
