Norma’s Hot Dog & Hamburger Relish

  1. Chop the Vegetables
Finely chop the green tomatoes, onions, and green bell peppers.

  2. Drain Excess Liquid
Place the chopped vegetables in a wire strainer and allow the extra liquid to drain thoroughly.

  3. Combine in Pot
Transfer the drained vegetables into a large stainless steel pot (avoid other metals, as the acid from tomatoes can react). A roaster pan can be used if stainless isn’t available.

  4. Add Seasonings & Vinegar
Add the apple cider vinegar, granulated sugar, mustard seed, and celery seed to the pot. Stir well to combine.

  5. Boil
Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally.

  6. Add Turmeric
Once boiling, remove the pot from heat. Stir in the turmeric.

  7. Jar the Relish
Spoon the hot relish into sterilized pint jars, leaving 1/2 inch of space at the top. Wipe the rims with a clean cloth to remove any residue.

  8. Seal Jars
Place lids and bands on the jars and tighten. The jars will self-seal—no additional processing is necessary.

Final Notes:

This recipe yields about 7 to 8 pint jars. It’s a nostalgic, flavorful relish that adds a special homemade touch to any summer meal. Try it on hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, or even as a tangy addition to deviled eggs and potato salad.

Enjoy!
