Here’s How to Clean Your Flat Iron Floor to Keep It Looking Like New

Candle Method: Not everyone knows this technique, but it’s one of the best ways to clean a burnt iron soleplate. You’ll need a white candle and an old towel or microfiber cloth. Alternatively, you can use an abrasive sponge and half a lemon. This quick and easy method will make your iron soleplate sparkle. First, heat your iron until it’s warm, but not too hot to touch. Then, unplug it and rub the candle across the hot soleplate, preferably over an old cloth to avoid a mess. The wax will melt on contact. Then, iron the old towel. If the dirt is still there, use an abrasive sponge. Finally, rub the surface with half a lemon for its degreasing properties.

Vinegar and Water: This mixture is a quick and effective way to clean your iron. White vinegar has degreasing properties and effectively removes scale. Make sure your iron is unplugged. Mix equal parts water and vinegar, then add 2 tablespoons of fine salt. Soak a soft sponge, wring it out well, and gently rub the soleplate of your iron until it is clean. Your natural cleaner will make your iron shine!

Marseille soap: Known for its powerful degreasing properties, Marseille soap is ideal for removing burn marks from your iron. Apply the soap paste to the hotplate, being careful not to make a mess. Then wipe off the excess first with crumpled newspaper and then with a clean, damp cloth.

Lemon: The degreasing and cleaning properties of lemon are amazing. Heat the iron and then unplug it. Rub the surface with half a lemon. For an extra degreasing effect, use a sponge with a few drops of vinegar. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of washing-up liquid and water, but make sure it is rinsed out well. Finally, rinse thoroughly and dry.

Salt: An excellent natural cleaner, salt can also be used to clean a burnt iron soleplate. Place a sheet of parchment paper on an ironing board and sprinkle salt on it. Preheat the iron and iron over the salt as you would iron clothes.

Note: You can use aluminum foil if you don’t have parchment paper!

Warnings: Always unplug your iron when cleaning and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.
